MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING CANCER CENTER – BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT PATIENT RESIDENCE

Patients undergoing bone marrow transplants for blood cancers and other disorders have unique lodging needs during treatment. Strong immunosuppressant drugs are required during bone marrow transplants, lowering the patient’s ability to fight infection and disease. The Patient Residence was created to allow patients easy access to the hospital, create a calm and home like surroundings to reduce stress, and provide a clean environment to reduce the chance of complications. The former apartment building was renovated to enlarge the lobby, increase ADA accessibility, and improve the water filtration system to protect the immunosuppressed people from diseases such as legionella. Each apartment has cable TV, Internet, phone service, a washer/dryer, kitchen essentials, and on-site concierge services to assist with care coordination. Transportation to and from Memorial Hospital is available.

Required re-filing the existing building from a residential to transient occupancy, which required the installation of a generator and a full fire alarm upgrade. E4H worked closely with the Owner, Consultants and Expeditor to coordinate the extent of renovations required at the beginning of the project to minimize change orders.

Required the renovation of two existing apartments into fully ADA compliant apartments, which required the expansion of the bathroom and kitchen footprints within an existing apartment layout.
