WEILL CORNELL COMPREHENSIVE PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY PROGRAM & EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The conversion of the psychiatric seclusion suite into an extended observation beds (EOB) unit completed the design of the Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation Program (CPEP). The project also included the renovation of the existing Psych ED and its extension from 6 to 12 beds.

The unit offers an opportunity for further psychiatric examination and evaluation for a not-to-exceed 72 hours. It is located on the 11th floor and consists of six single-bedded rooms with wonderful views of the East River. All the rooms open into a common lounge area that has a TV and comfortable furniture. The entrance walls separate private patient rooms from the lounge with vision panels made of electronic polycarbonate that changes from clear to opaque, providing privacy for patients while allowing easy observation by staff.

The CPEP unit includes a nutrition station adjacent to a central food service room, which allows meals to be served through a pass-through without bringing carts into the locked unit.
