KINDRED REHABILITATION HOSPITAL OF NORTHEAST HOUSTON

Kindred Rehabilitation Hospital is a freestanding, “green field” rehabilitation hospital located near President George Bush Airport in Northeast Houston, Texas. This hospital is designed to facilitate post-acute rehabilitation treatment for a wide range of conditions. The facility includes inpatient and outpatient therapy spaces, an indoor resistance therapy pool, dietary services, nursing unit patient care, and support spaces.

The decision for a two-story design was influenced by restrictive site conditions. Easy transportation of patients to and from therapy spaces across two floors multiple times each day became paramount to the design process. Elevators were strategically located and oriented to encourage ease of circulation. Providing group meeting and dining space on the patient room floor also reduced the number of elevator trips for inpatients. The program incorporated a 12-bed high observation unit which is comparable and convertible to an intensive care unit. This chassis was also designed for flexibility with the option to convert into a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH). Additional design considerations were made to allow for future expansion with additional rehabilitation beds.

The project included a full master plan of the site to create a physically connected, 60-bed skilled nursing facility, and a separate Alzheimer unit on the campus.
