Trinity Health of New England’s Johnson Memorial Hospital renovated an existing surgical unit into a 12,000SF Geriatric Wellness Pavilion, creating a safe and supportive healing environment for the local senior community. The facility includes 7 private rooms, 4 semi-private rooms, and support space to meet Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) parameters.

A separate 1,500SF intensive outpatient therapy clinic provides services to patients transitioning out of inpatient care, as well as referrals from the local Senior Center. The clinic features private consultation rooms, group therapy rooms, and a training kitchen/laundry space for occupational therapies.

To provide a sense of familiarity, finishes and materials were selected to reflect the region’s New England character. Traditional colors and large landscape graphics throughout the unit reinforce the sense of place. A curvilinear floor pattern wraps around the unit core to create a garden pathway for wandering patients. Locating the patient dining and social spaces off of a central nursing station allows for easier observation and communication by staff while promoting choice of activity of the patients.
