3 men with shovels for groundbreaking

The Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute (LCI) broke ground on a state-of-the-art facility, bringing the first proton beam therapy and gamma knife radiosurgery to the Carolinas region. Guided by a dedication to patient-centered care, E4H worked closely with Atrium Health to create a future-focused environment that will provide these innovative cancer therapies.

The Levine Cancer Institute is the only cancer center in the United States to earn Gold Certification for Excellence in Person-Centered Care by Planetree International. Guided by the holistic Planetree framework, the E4H design team led a mission-driven, Lean process. The resulting facility fosters a sense of calm and healing, while balancing the technical complexity of accommodating a three-story rotating proton gantry weighing 300,000 pounds. Manufactured by Mevion, this is the world’s only gantry-mounted proton accelerator which can deliver a proton beam to the patient with the accuracy of less than 1mm.

“E4H is proud to be a part of this groundbreaking project” said Jim Johnson, CEO and Partner-in-Charge.  “We are deeply connected with the mission of Atrium Health, and have a shared vision for the immense impact this treatment will have on patient outcomes.”

Expected to open in 2023, the Levine Cancer Institute will be the only center between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta that offers proton beam therapy. The facility will also bring gamma knife radiosurgery to Charlotte, offering enhanced treatment for those with complex brain lesions, keeping the Levine Cancer Institute at the forefront of multidisciplinary care and continued research collaboration.
