Neighborhood Hospitals; Strategic Alternatives for System Growth

Access to care and value-based economics have placed health systems in a very difficult position. The traditional destination bricks and mortar medical center campus represents an outdated and limiting strategy for healthcare systems. Consumer demand and the retailing of healthcare are shaping delivery alternatives. The consumer is now the focus and expects convenient patient centered design that offers choices, promotes transparency and capitalizes on technology. To that end, Neighborhood Hospitals have become popular in many areas of the country particularly as a market growth and value strategy response. Although the Neighborhood Hospital definition can be broad, successful implementation requires disciplined planning and design. Neighborhood Hospitals require a clear strategy, a sound operational model, strategic partnerships, appropriate utilization of available technologies and a clinical support strategy in order to be successful. The potential for significant impact on a health systems future in response to the changing economics and clinical delivery of healthcare is exciting. This session will share experiences with planning Neighborhood Hospitals (considerations for flexibility and expandability), discuss key operational areas and illustrate technological & clinical innovations that effectively support this model.
