E4H’s long-term relationship with Central Maine Medical Center has included projects in both acute and ambulatory care. By creating patient-centered, flexible environments the new design helped Central Maine Medical Center address the needs of the community as well as prepare for future growth.

A flexible emergency department was developed with a layout that adjusts to changes in patient volume over a 24-hour cycle. The 42 private universal rooms have separate patient/visitor and medical/clinical access points to enhance patient privacy and increase provider efficiency. A clinical laboratory is located above the emergency department and is designed to accommodate the needs of the department as well as inpatient care.

The Heart and Vascular Institute at Central Maine Medical Center includes both inpatient and outpatient cardiac treatment. In addition to physician’s offices and family spaces, a 20-bed variable acuity intensive/critical care unit addresses the needs of cardiac surgery patients requiring a broad range of care.
